The Digital Humanities Center is an interdisciplinary research center and intellectual community at the University of Virginia, located within Shannon Library.
The DH Center explores the connections between digital technologies and society, fostering critical and creative engagements with computational methods in research, teaching, and public engagement. We bring together scholars and practitioners in the digital humanities and related disciplines, and support innovative scholarship through fellowships, collaborations, and partnerships. Our workshops and events are open to researchers at all levels — beginner or expert — in the University and wider community. From ad hoc consultations to long-term partnerships, we are a digital humanities launch pad and landing place for all.
The DHC brings decades of expertise supporting interdisciplinary humanities research through UVA’s eminent practitioners in digital humanities, the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities (IATH) and the Scholars’ Lab. Complementing the specialist librarians and other research wings of the Library, the DHC’s sixteen full-time experts support members of the University and community, regardless of status, field, or subject area, to pursue their digital and experimental research and pedagogical projects.

Consultations & course integrations
Our staff provide research and teaching consultations on a variety of digital humanities concepts, approaches, and tools, including digital collections & exhibitions, data collection and management, machine learning/AI, text analysis, digital mapping, cultural heritage preservation, and more. Our particular strengths lie in the critical pedagogical and scholarly applications of those technologies for the humanities.
Consultations on research or teaching are available for UVA instructors and students by appointment; we are here to support initial brainstorming through to existing projects at any level of expertise. With advance notice, we also welcome faculty requests for class visits and instruction.

Fellowships & training
The DH Center supports students and faculty who apply computational approaches to humanistic questions in research and teaching. We offer a variety of funded fellowships and ongoing training opportunities, as well as referrals and collaborations with other UVA Library digital scholarly initiatives and the College of Arts & Sciences Digital Humanities and AI Program.

Critical and Creative AI: For the (Digital) Humanities Lecture Series 2026-27
The DHC has partnered with the Institute of Arts and Humanities to bring five leading scholar-practitioners to UVA this year. The workshops and lectures will create a space for critical and creative conversations around humanities AI, as well as opportunities for workshopping and making.
The program begins September 2nd, when Patricia Murrieta-Flores (TEC Monterrey) presents a workshop on machine learning in Latin American and Indigenous archives that offers practical frameworks and principles for more just, situated, and community-anchored technologies.
Applications are now open for 2027-28 Praxis Fellowships
The Praxis Program is a unique and well-known training program in the international digital humanities, offered by the UVa Library’s Scholars’ Lab. This fellowship supports a team of University of Virginia PhD students each year as they explore various aspects of digital humanities together. If you are interested in applying for next year's cohort, we would love to talk to you, and to answer any questions you have.
The fellowship comes with an award of $10,000, distributed during the fellowship year. All details can be found on the CFP page. The deadline for applications is November 1, 2026.
Digital Repatriation in the Darien: Announcing our new DAC-DHC Team Fellows
Prof. Rolando Vargas and graduate student Slenka Botello from Art History were selected for the Data Analytics Center and DH Center fellowship program to support their work with digital repatriation of artifacts created by Indigenous Guna communities in the Darien Gap.
Their work kicked off in June 2026 and will last for one year. Stay tuned for news and updates!
